Genius Hour week 5- Learning Styles

My learning style is hands-on, I need to try things out, I need to do in order to figure out how things work. I realized that I’m very visual too. I like to make lists and sketch things out, I highlight and take notes on my books, I love sticky notes and color-coding things. I think that there must be a mental connection/reward for me when I get to do something physical and see the end result.

When considering the type of learner that I am while attempting different activities during my Genius Hour project I realized:

  • Playing the piano: It is a combination of kinesthetic, visual, and audio.  I have to practice, to physically touch the keys, I can learn from watching videos and listening to audio, but ultimately I have to practice to reap the benefits.
  • Yoga: Again a combination of kinesthetic and visual. I realized that I enjoy practicing yoga videos more than I thought I was going to. In the past, I had gone to a yoga studio but creating my own playlists has worked out nicely.
  • Running: total kinesthetic activity and one that I enjoy better with friends. However, I have started reading more books (training books) and have joined a virtual team with coaches that will host Zoom meetings and Facebook live events.
  • Meditation: journaling is a kinesthetic activity for me. I like to write down my thoughts much better than listening to a guided meditation or using any electronic format.

Here is my Dip chart

  1. Hi Inma!

I have noticed I am also a kinesthetic learner as well. I am working a growing plants for my project and I am learning best when I am actually doing the things I need to do. The visual learning also helps me. I notice I like when I find blog posts that include pictures of what they are talking about rather than just using words to explain it. It seems as all of your activities have been a good fit for you!

  2. Hi Inma,

I also am a kinesthetic learner and have continued to see that during my genius hour project. My project is planning meals and cooking dinner each night. I have learned best from trying out recipes and actually doing it instead of looking at videos or recipes. I definitely use those visuals while I am cooking so I know what to do and they assist me as well. Thanks for sharing your activities!

  3. Hi Inma,
I am also a visual and kinesthetic learner. I am finding myself going immediately to youtube videos if I need to find out how to do something. I bypass the reading. Not that I don't like to read, but when I have to create something, then I like the visual instructions to make sure I am on the right track. I am also a list maker and keep things organized when I work on a project. Seems like you are enjoying all your activities! Good Luck!

  4. Hi Inma,
I am also a visual and kinesthetic learner. I love your idea of sticky notes and lists! I have found them extremely helpful especially with all of this extra time we have during quarantine to get things done. There is something satisfying about checking off projects as they are completed. I also love your idea of color-coding. I have been thinking of ways to do that too. I recently saw a picture of an entire refrigerator being color-coded and it looked so cool! I love your ideas!
